Review: 8 / 10
“A very enjoyable movie about a very talented artist who gets luted into becoming a forger. He soon gets involved with the mob and things start heating up. The fine acting and sometimes humorous script is what really makes this really stand out. The artist himself and the gambling, vodka drinking art dealer are very strongly portrayed characters by very talented actors. The insight into the art world and the interesting facts thrown in add greatly to my interest in this film. There is also a pretty decent sound track, one of the songs being Rose Rouge – St. Germain.” Written by paul-ayres-60784.

  1. I like this movie. Good performances and a great soundtrack. You can't help but feel for the lead character, he has the technical skills, drive and talent to be a great painter but he hadn't found his true voice yet. His greatest mistake was that perhaps he was too concerned about being a success instead of being a good painter- he tried to paint what he thought other people would like rather than paint what truly inspired him. Maybe with time, perseverance and patience, he would have found that inspiration & his voice, but he instead chose the easier path of quick success.
The film is correct about the art world. There are an awful lot of fake artworks out there and some of those fakes are still hanging on the walls of some of the world's most prestigious public galleries. And sometimes their owners and curators are aware, or at least suspect, that those works are fakes but choose not to admit it or pretend not to notice. Sometimes it's easier to look the other way, there's too much money, too many careers and too much professional pride at stake. After all, it's not just the owner of the artwork who will suffer, in terms of their finances, pride and social status, if it is revealed to be a forgery. There's also the reputation of the dealer who sold it, the reputation of their gallery and that of the former owners of the artwork and the art experts who authenticated it in the first place. And then there is of course the balance sheets of the insurance company and the ticket sales of the galleries who rely on patrons paying to see works by the masters.
