Incredibly, justifiably angry, LA Riot Spectacular is a ZAZ style parody about the Rodney King trial and ensuing riots. It has a lot of jokes to tell, but it tells them like it’s using sarcasm to avoid completely breaking down, like when something happens at work over and over again, and you say to your coworkers, “Hey, it’s a good thing we never do that here”, only instead of a workplace annoyance, it’s police brutality.

It’s like those parody ads in Bamboozled, but for 80 minutes. It claims to be an equal opportunity offender, but it’s very clear that anything making fun of minority populations is in service of the larger cultural critique.

It’s got one hell of a cast, and everyone is here to make you look at the whole fucking ordeal and think, “Well, yeah, that was really awful, and well yeah, maybe it should have gone differently and, well, yeah, maybe in 2022 we shouldn’t still find so much of this relatable.”

And you know what, you’re not going to watch this thing, but maybe you should. This is very much a Secret Success in every sense of the word. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, it is angry and passionate.
