The Pirate (God Loves Caviar) is the compelling story of IOANNIS VARVAKIS, and his journey from humble Greek pirate to international caviar millionaire, with the ear of Catherine the Great of Russia. His wealth and power, however, do not give him contentment, and his boundless ambition only brings suffering, until he gives everything away, including himself, in the name of love. This epic tale, based on Varvakis’ real life, moves from the Greek island of Psara to the court of Catherine the Great in Russia and the shores of the Caspian Sea, and then back to Greece, a country torn by civil war and the fight for independence, during the Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire.

The movie is so exciting but the history is defrent
A very pretty film not super realistic but kind. This could be a nice TV series. In 2 hours they only could manage a story in a style of an abbreviated narration, almost like a simplified version of a novel. It is worth watching at least once.
It is about Greeks and doesn't have greek subtitles. What a misery.

What I love about this movie is it really showcases how the pirates, particularly in the agean and Mediterranean, wernt just all about evil , but there was also an aspect of it about punishing or striking back at the oppressors

Great movie, very deep and sad…Not the usual pirate movie
It was an interesting movie hinting at history but with many historical inaccuracies. While Sebastian Koch was very sympathetic in the role it would have added a favorable flair if he had spoken English with a Greek accent. Ioannis did not have a son in real life. It was his daughter Maria whose descendants bear his name hyphenated.

I am a 53 year old man sitting at home on my couch and I've been brought to tears my name is Efstratios Varvakis..I don't know what this means.. but my heart just broke into a million pieces and somehow at the same time I feel so proud.. Thank you to all that were involved in this film..I don't know what more to say
