Spoiler-alert:
Koontz is my one of my favorite horror authors, but (almost) practically all his novels go like this:
Wonderful family, sometimes with a single parent, sometimes not, but always with a lovely, somehow gifted child and ALWAYS an obligatory Golden (or eventually white) Retriever.
Second: some demonic cult, wanting to kill the child aka destroy that family (or both)
Third: the police is evil and into it and so won't help.
Fourth: private investigators are good guys, but mostly totally incompetent.
Last: self justice and self defense is the only rescue. 😑👊
