Reviews:
“We rented this tonight thinking it was a straightforward comedy, but it’s so much more than that. Huge props to the makers for exploring a side of maleness that we don’t often see in film.

When it started, I was sure it was a remake of a European film; we both agreed it “just wasn’t” American. And it’s not, at least it’s not anything like any American film we’ve seen before.

A bunch a men meet once a month to talk. “Check in,” they call it. Twenty minutes in, I remarked “what a bunch of women.” An hour in I realized that my statement was the definition of toxic masculinity!

They start with superficial stuff, nothing special. But as the day wears on weaknesses are exposed and buried feelings come to the surface. We paused it several times to talk about what was going on, and how we saw it from our own gender perspective. It was a great conversation movie, and I think we learned a lot (at least about each other’s experiences).

Eye opening, sometimes seriously laugh out loud funny, sad, and brilliant.

I hope more US filmmakers will take note and give us more films like this. As a woman, I found it fascinating, and it really really reminded me why I love men.”

  1. At some moments it was very sad, sometimes too serious. This story shows how difficult it is to be a man. At least from the part of their perception of all these modern men's difficulties. And fathers … oh, how enormously much sons (and daughters) NEED them in their whole force and energy of life ! But … there are still so many abandoned kids on this planet. Abandoned by their dads. I feel real sorrow.

  2. Nice, intelligent movie. Having a crush on both Tim Bottoms and Tobolowskiy, it was nice to see them 'in the flesh' … much like when I found the clip of Randy Quaid doing Shakespeare 'au Naturale'

  3. This was a fantastic movie. I shed a few tears when Mike lost it. Very emotional. I have always said that society lies to men from boyhood on: "you have to be strong" "act like a man" "boys don't cry" "don't be a sissy" and on it goes from the age of toddlers. I raised three boys and always told them to never be ashamed of crying, that God gave us all tears, not just females. And that only strong men cry and talk about their feelings. And a bonus is that women, most women, feel that men who can talk about their feelings, their fears, their painful experiences, and can cry… are very sexy. Because women see these men as truly the strong ones. If there were more groups like this one in this movie, I believe it would have a tremendous positive impact on the family and on society as a whole. Thanks so much for a great movie!
